Concept definition: A <DEVICE> for measuring the height of <TIDE>; tide gauge. This may be a graduated staff in a sheltered <LOCATION> where visual observations can be made, or it may consist of an elaborate recording <DEVICE> making a continuous graphic record of the height of the <TIDE> against time. It is usually actuated by a float in a <PIPE> communicating with the sea through a small <APERTURE>, which filters out shorter <WATER_WAVE>s.
